Five minutes of maths a day: a routine that survives real life
The best practice schedule is the one that still happens in week six. Five minutes, same time, every day, with something visible to protect.
Why five minutes works and thirty does not
Memory consolidates between sessions, not during them. Five short sessions give the brain five nights to file the facts; one long session gives it one. Short sessions also end before frustration, so the next one is easier to start — which is the whole game with a seven-year-old.
The number five is not magic. It is simply the length a child will do without negotiation, which makes it the length that actually happens.
Where to put it in the day
- After breakfast, before school: fresh brain, fixed slot, no homework competition.
- Straight after school snack: before the evening slides away.
- Before the bedtime story: works well if the story is the reward, badly if the child is already tired.
- Avoid "whenever": routines that float do not survive the first busy week.
Let the streak do the nagging
A visible run of days changes who wants the practice to happen. After a week, the child is protecting something. Keep the target small — the app starts at five days — and celebrate reaching it rather than the maths itself. Missing a day is not a failure; starting again the next morning is the skill.
Setting the routine up in Kalko
One round a day is all the streak needs.
- Pick the slot. Agree it once with the child; write it on the fridge next to the phone's charging spot.
- Open the app, do one round. Any mode counts: Learn a table, a Practice round, or a Challenge level. Five questions.
- Watch the streak card. On Home, the card shows days in a row and the 5-day target with tick circles filling up.
- Collect the milestone trophies. Warm Up (3 quizzes), Quiz Traveler (10), Steady Launch (25) — the trophy room dates each one.
- Check the calendar monthly. The profile's activity grid shows every practice day. Gaps show a routine that needs a better slot, not a child who needs a lecture.
There are no push notifications in version 1.0; the streak lives on the home screen and in the profile.

- Tie the round to something that already happens every day (teeth, breakfast, the bedtime story), not to a clock time.
- On holiday, keep the round and drop everything else. Tables fade fast over six weeks off.
- If the streak breaks, do not restart the target at 30. Restart at 5.
Questions about daily practice
Is five minutes really enough?
For fact fluency, yes — provided it is daily and the level is right. Longer sessions help with understanding new topics, which is a different job from practice.
What if my child refuses some days?
Shrink the ask: one question, or just opening the app to look at the streak. The routine matters more than the round.
