Division facts practice: learning the tables backwards
42 ÷ 7 is not a new fact; it is 7 × 6 read from the other end. Children who struggle with division almost always have gaps in the tables underneath it.
One fact, four questions
6 × 7 = 42, 7 × 6 = 42, 42 ÷ 6 = 7, 42 ÷ 7 = 6. Schools call this a fact family. A child who has met all four together does not learn division as a separate subject; they learn to turn a division around into the multiplication they already know.
The teaching question is therefore always the same: "7 times what makes 42?" Once that reframing is automatic, division facts arrive at the same speed as the tables.
Order and common snags
Follow the tables order: dividing by 2, 10 and 5 first, then 4, 3, 6, 9, then 7, 8 and 12. Two snags to watch for: dividing by 1 (the answer is the number itself, which feels like a trick), and the difference between 0 ÷ 5 and 5 ÷ 0 (the second has no answer — and never appears in the app).
