The 7 times table: why it is hard and how to learn it anyway

Ask a room of nine-year-olds which table they dread and most will say seven. It has no doubling trick, no digit pattern, and its products look like everyone else's. Here is what works.

Why the sevens are hard

Every other table leans on something: the 2s on doubling, the 5s on their last digit, the 9s on the digit sum, the 4s and 8s on the 2s. Seven is prime and larger than five, so none of that applies. The products (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84) share their last digits with other tables, so a child who half-remembers has nothing to check against.

Three ways through it

  • Reversals first. If the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 tables are known, then 7 × 2, 7 × 3, 7 × 4, 7 × 5, 7 × 6, 7 × 8, 7 × 9 and 7 × 10 are already known from the other side. That leaves 7 × 7 = 49 as the only new fact — and 7 × 11 and 7 × 12 for schools that go to 12.
  • Anchors. Fix two facts as landmarks — 7 × 5 = 35 and 7 × 8 = 56 ("5, 6, 7, 8") — and reach the neighbours by adding or subtracting 7: 7 × 6 is 35 + 7, 7 × 9 is 56 + 7.
  • Typed, mixed, daily. Once the facts exist, the only thing that makes them fast is retrieving them from memory, shuffled, with no options on screen, a few times a day for a week.

While you are there: 8 and 12

The 8s are the doubled 4s (8 × 6 = 4 × 6 doubled = 48). The 12s are the 10s plus the 2s (12 × 7 = 70 + 14 = 84). Both are far easier than 7, and children who have just beaten the sevens usually finish them in a few days.

  1. Read the table. Learn → Multiplication → 7. All twelve facts on one screen; say them together, then cover the answers and try again.
  2. Practise it alone. Practice → Set Up & Start with 5 questions on Easy. Repeat once a day until two rounds in a row are 5/5.
  3. Raise the difficulty. Switch the set-up sheet to Medium, then Hard, so the sevens appear mixed with the other tables.
  4. Type it in Challenge. The Multiplication challenge asks for typed answers with no choices. A three-star level with sevens in it is the real proof.

Tips

  • Say "5, 6, 7, 8" for 56 = 7 × 8. It is the single most-missed fact in the tables and the rhyme does not wear off.
  • Treat 7 × 7 = 49 as a fact to memorise on its own; it has no reversal to lean on.
  • Do the sevens in the morning. Hard facts learned when a child is fresh survive better than ones crammed at bedtime.

Is there a trick for the 7 times table?

Not a digit trick like the 9s have. The reliable method is reversals (learn the other tables first) plus two anchor facts, 7 × 5 = 35 and 7 × 8 = 56, and then daily typed practice.

In what order should I teach the tables?
